Almere: a city with its own character and identity
That cities like Almere (and Lelystad) would arise in the IJsselmeer polders was not originally intended at all. The polders were meant to be agricultural land. But because the Dutch population grew so rapidly after the war, it was decided to create new cities in the polder. In Almere, Amsterdam residents in particular were supposed to find a new home. It did (and still does), although the polder city has long since ceased to be a satellite of the capital. Over the years, the city has truly developed its own character and identity. And more and more Almonds were born there.
Natural and recreational areas
The fact that Almere is a city of space is due in part to the numerous nature and recreational areas in and around the city. Think of the Almeerderstrand, the Cirkelbos, the Weerwater, the Zilverstrand, the Kromslootpark, the Leeghwaterplas, the Oostvaarderbos and the Oostvaardersplassen.
City districts with their own character
The city is made up of different districts, each with its own atmosphere and identity. The oldest district is Almere Haven, with a somewhat village-like character, which is partly due to the many courtyards. Almere Buiten, on the other hand, is characterized by space and nature. Almere Hout is a more rural part of the polder town. Almere Stad lives up to its name: modern and urban, with all the amenities you would expect in a city center. And one of the big attractions of Almere Poort is the Almeerderstrand, on the IJmeer.
