Brands: houses on mounds, against floods
Marken was therefore an island for centuries, located in the Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer). Marken was regularly ravaged by floods. The inhabitants of Marken therefore built their houses on mounds, also called 'werven'. To make good use of such a mound, the houses were built as close together as possible.
Pile dwellings
As the terpen filled up in the nineteenth century, the people of Marken began to build their houses on stilts. With the construction of the Afsluitdijk, the danger of flooding disappeared. This also allowed the space under the "stilt houses" to be utilized, thus creating the lower houses. Of the 27 original terpen, fifteen remain. Eleven of these are still inhabited. The terpen of Marken are iconic for the former island and can be seen from afar. To discover the charm of Marken itself, a walk along the terpen is highly recommended.

Marken is a picturesque village with fantastic water views. There's no shortage of amenities. In the charming old center of the former fishing village, you'll find shops for daily necessities and nice places to eat out. And when the weather is nice, you can enjoy a drink at a cafe overlooking the marina. Marken also has (among other things) a primary school and a general practitioner.

Do you like water sports? Then you can fully enjoy yourself here. Marken is surrounded by water, and you can moor in the marina. And if you need the hustle and bustle of the big city for a while? Amsterdam is only a half-hour's drive away. If you take your bike, it'll take you a good hour. But you'll be cycling through a magnificent fenland area rich in water and birdlife.
