Amsterdam North: from remote gallows field to a place you want to live
For a long time, Amsterdam Noord was rather isolated from the rest of the city. For centuries it was the site of the gallows field, where convicts were hanged after their execution, as a deterrent. Later, Noord became the beating heart of Amsterdam's shipbuilding and industry. More or less parallel to this, the first garden city districts arose in Noord. Still, Noord remained more or less separate from the rest of Amsterdam. This has really changed in recent years. Responsible for this are (among other things) the construction of new neighborhoods, the development of cultural breeding grounds and the arrival of major cultural attractions, such as EYE Film Museum and the A'DAM Tower. Consequently, many people are moving to Noord these days. Currently, the district has about 100,000 residents. In 30 years, according to the municipality, there will be about 150,000.
