Living in Haarlem, near beach and nature
This is due in part to its proximity to the beaches of Bloemendaal and Zandvoort, which you can get to either by train or bicycle. The beautiful National Park Zuid-Kennemerland is also in the immediate vicinity. Just like colorful Bollenstreek, with the Keukenhof as a big draw, of course. Closer to home you will find beautiful parks and urban forests, of which the Haarlemmerhout and the Kenaupark are the best known.
History everywhere
Not only Haarlem's city center breathes a rich history. Also in the neighborhoods around it you will find a lot of history. Such as beautifully preserved villas, mansions and workers' houses from the early twentieth or late nineteenth century, and monumental buildings from earlier periods. Such as the Amsterdam Gate (Haarlem's only remaining city gate) and the neoclassical Pavilion Welgelegen.
20 minutes from Amsterdam
Another plus of Haarlem: the city is less than 20 car minutes from Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport. And public transportation is excellent; with a train station close to the center and numerous bus stops, you can easily get where you want to be.
