Three new residential buildings in the vast greenery of Watergang
On the water, among meadows and birds, yet still within easy reach of Amsterdam. Three new-build homes that combine the warmth of traditional North Holland log construction with contemporary, comfortable living.
Living between meadows and water
Three new residential units are rising on the Broekermeerdijk in Watergang, where the polder merges into the historic dike line. The architecture is inspired by the agricultural barns that have defined this landscape for centuries: a high, continuous roof and a sleek, vertical cladding in a deep, soft black shade. From the dike and the polder, the silhouette looks familiar.
On the inside, it's a different story: light and spacious, with high glass walls on the sunny southwest side that draw the garden and the polder into the living room. Thus, the originally closed barn has been transformed into a contemporary, warm living space.
This is living with the tranquility of the countryside yet close to the city. And the comfort you can expect from contemporary, high-quality new construction.
Watergang: village, by the water, yet close to Amsterdam
Watergang is located in the heart of Waterland, the vast meadow area north of Amsterdam, part of the National Landscape of Low Holland. The plot is located directly on the Broekervaart, with unobstructed views of the adjacent polder.
However, you are never far from the bustling world: Amsterdam, Broek in Waterland, Monnickendam and Purmerend are within cycling distance or a short drive away.
A barn volume, translated into modern times
Damast Architects designed Broekermeerdijk 16B, 16C and 16D with one recognizable, archetypal shed volume that brings together three independent family homes. The plot is deliberately located at a wide distance from the dike, in the third building line: this way, the historical sightlines between the dike and the polder are restored and the green character of the dike road remains intact. The roof shape respects the size and direction of the historical building plots in Waterland.
The facades are clad with wood in a deep, soft black hue, a reference to the traditional, enclosed agricultural barns of North Holland. On the underside of the overhangs, the deliberate choice of untreated wood creates a warm contrast to the dark facade. On the seaward side, the house appears powerful and sheltered; on the sunny south and west sides, the volume opens up with high glass panels in untreated Accoya wood and triple glazing. The windows on the east and west facades are made of aluminum.
Inside, the house delivers on what the facade promises: a spacious, open living room/kitchen on the ground floor, three bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor, and under the high roof a fully-fledged fourth bedroom with natural light through multiple skylights.
Black-tailed godwits in the sky, cows in the meadow and the peace and quiet of the open countryside. In Watergang, just above Amsterdam, you really live in the country. If you are looking for new construction in Watergang, you will get plenty of space, tranquility and nature. While bustling Amsterdam is within cycling distance.
