For the third time, Amsterdam residents have cast their votes for the best housing project of the past year. Alderman Maarten van Poelgeest announced the winner during a live broadcast by AT5 in the theater hall of the Amsterdam Public Library. The award went to thunderous applause for the residents, the client Blauwhoed Eurowoningen, the architect Queeste architecten, and the contractor Slokker Bouwgroep.
Haveneiland Oost Block 51a is located on Emmy Andriessestraat in IJburg. The building consists of a row of 26 city homes, varying in size from 176 to 193 m2. Due to its location between Theo van Gogh Park and the 'green tunnel', the homes have an unobstructed view on both sides.
For Queeste architects, the challenge was to capture and make palpable to the residents both the qualities of the city and of nature within the building.
On the outside, the building has two faces. The facade facing Theo van Gogh Park is of warm, dark red brick. The unified use of materials, high rooflines, and rows of windows give it an urban appeal. This is accentuated by the garage entrance and exit and the striking clock. Very surprising, then, is the bright, sunny rear facing the 'green tunnel' with multi-level terraces. This receding facade is combined with six-meter-high portals of Siberian larch. The portals distinguish the individual homes and offer a beautiful framing of nature.
Haveneiland Oost Block 51a received 18% votes from Amsterdam residents, making it the top choice among the ten nominated new construction projects.
