SCHUTTERSTOREN WINS AMSTERDAM NEW CONSTRUCTION PRIZE 2008

For the second time, Amsterdam residents have cast their votes for the most beautiful residential project of the past year. Mayor Cohen announced the winner during a live TV broadcast by AT5 in the auditorium of the Public Library Amsterdam. He presented the award to client Stadgenoot and Proper Stok, architectural firm DKV Architecten, contractor VBK Hoorn, and the residents of the Schutterstoren.

The Schutterstoren is located on Oeverpad on the edge of Sloterpark in the Osdorp district and is part of the Meer en Oever renovation plan. The residential tower contains 54 owner-occupied homes, ranging in size from 81 to 187 m². Architectural firm DKV Architecten called it an almost impossible task to design a 'landmark' on the Sloterplas that could not be higher than 12 stories. They opted for a compact concrete core with a steel structure, a choice that is very unusual in residential construction. The cylindrical building is related to the archetype of the water tower. The tower stands on a mound that conceals the parking spaces.

The residential tower is praised for its beautiful views, its location in a green area and by the water, its luxurious finishes, and its futuristic appearance.
