Oostzaan: Centuries-Old History
Oostzaan is one of the three oldest villages in the Zaan region. The village's history, therefore, goes back a long way, to the time of land reclamation in the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries. Over the centuries, the village grew in a southerly direction. Later, a new neighborhood even emerged on the then-wide IJ: the Oostzaner overtoom. To give Amsterdam room to expand, this neighborhood was incorporated into the capital in 1921, along with the IJ-polder. The Tuindorp Oostzaan housing development was subsequently built there. Later, in 1966, another part of Oostzaan was annexed by Amsterdam, the current Oostzanerwerf city district.
Shops, theater, library, and restaurants in Oostzaan
Despite these instances of "land grabbing," Oostzaan itself also grew in the twentieth century. New construction took place, particularly in the Kerkbuurt. The village center is also located there, with (among other things) shops for daily groceries and the social-cultural center De KunstGreep. In it, you will find a theater, a library, catering facilities, and venues for parties and film screenings. The town hall is also housed in this building. Speaking of catering facilities, you can dine out in Oostzaan at more than ten restaurants and eateries.
