Zaan timber architecture
Krommenie, a village of about 17,000 inhabitants, has existed for some 775 years. That past can be seen in dozens of national and municipal monuments. Many of those monuments are centuries-old houses with the characteristic Zaan timber architecture. Such as on the Noorderhoofdstraat, the long shopping street in the center of the village. The Nicolaaskerk is also an example of this, at least its striking green-painted wooden tower.
World Heritage
Another historic structure – not in Zaan wooden architecture – is located just outside the village: the Fort near Krommeniedijk. This old defense work is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. This belt of fortifications once served to defend the capital. It belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage.
Amsterdam and Zaandam easily accessible
Krommenie is known as a pleasant village for families who want to live in a quiet area while still being close to the Randstad. By car, you can reach the A8 within minutes, from where you can easily travel to Zaandam, Amsterdam, or Alkmaar. These cities are also easily accessible by train. Krommenie-Assendelft train station is about a 5-minute bike ride away. You can also take the bus, which stops around the corner. If you do not want to go to the big city, but rather enjoy peace and space, you do not have to go far; on the north side of Krommenie lies the Krommeniër Woudpolder. This is a vast peat meadow area that includes the Alkmaardermeer and the Uitgeestermeer. The North Sea coast is also an easy drive from Krommenie.
