Center Island: individual self-build and self-build by building groups
Center Island is about 15 acres in size. That's equivalent to about 23 soccer fields. It is the self-build island of Amsterdam. Of the approximately 1,500 to 1,700 homes that the neighborhood will eventually have, about 70 percent will be self-built. A small portion of those self-built homes are homes on individual self-build lots. A much larger portion involve residential buildings, realized by construction groups in collective private commissioning. There are also residential buildings with rental housing, realized by a housing cooperative. This is also a form of self-build, in which the initiators eventually rent the houses from the housing cooperative.
By streetcar to the center of Amsterdam
Centrumeiland is located on the east side of Amsterdam, in the IJmeer. It is the fourth island of IJburg, between Haveneiland and Strandeiland. Around the corner are IJburg's city beach and Diemer Vijfhoek nature reserve. If you live on Centrumeiland, the city is not far away. Streetcar 26 takes you straight to Amsterdam Central Station and bus 66 takes you to Bijlmer Arena station. If you still prefer to take the car, you can be on the A1 or A10 in just a few minutes.
