Villa Mokum: winner of the Amsterdam New Construction Prize 2016

Villa Mokum in the Amstelkwartier is a new construction complex with 627 studios. The 348 owner-occupied and 279 rental units for first-time buyers and students range in size from 28 to 33 m2 and all have their own kitchen and bathroom. The two large urban blocks on the Spaklerweg and two smaller blocks on the Amstelvlietstraat enclose a communal courtyard that is accessible to everyone during the day. A walking path connecting the neighborhood to the metro station, along which the entrances to the blocks are located, cuts through the complex.

The parking garage for the adjacent hotel is located beneath the southern part of the complex. The studios are accessed via internal corridors. Communal terraces and loggias, complemented by voids in the internal corridors, provide air, light, space, and social cohesion. Residents of two stacked floors share outdoor space and bicycle storage. This creates a clear social group within the larger whole. The facade is constructed from precast concrete elements with brickwork or concrete finishes. Slightly protruding courses and an Amsterdam tulip motif add relief and refinement to the facade. This motif was specially designed for Villa Mokum and is also found in the common areas, fences, graphic design of the corridors, and signage.
