The new Tugel blocks from M3H replace two of the five building blocks in an ensemble by architect Willem Leliman from 1915. The new blocks are directly inspired by Lelimans architecture. That applies to the typological solutions for the houses and the access routes, but also to the rational architecture and the attention to detail.
The project, which was also made possible through an intensive participatory process with the residents and neighbors, offers a wide variety of homes with great emphasis on individual living quality, spacious entrance areas, stairwells, galleries, and courtyards. Horizontal and vertical patterns of brickwork and windows, which refer to the ensemble of Leliman, form a whole, yet each facade is unique. The facades blend into the character of the streets on both sides: on the green roadway of the Tugelaweg, the facades have a monumental character, on the Retiefstraat a classic, early nineteenth-century street wall has been created, and on the three side streets vibrant, articulated facades define the image. The artwork integrated into the facades by AtelierNL is inspired by the tile panels of the original client in 1910, the Jewish Handwerkers Vriendenkring.
