The Future: nominated for the Amsterdam New Construction Prize 2019

The Future is the result of a tender where selection was based solely on the EPC (Energy Performance Coefficient). The 17 apartments in the complex have an EPC of -1.4 and generate energy! The developer's objective was to build the building of the future, hence the name The Future. The complex has very high insulation values in the ground floor slab, facade, and roof. Additionally, HR+++ glass has been used and a very high airtightness. In addition to extreme insulation in the building envelope, groundwater heat pumps were chosen to provide heating and cooling for the apartments.

The apartments, ranging in size from 50 to 100 square meters, feature underfloor heating with zone control, which also allows for cooling per zone. The apartments are equipped with mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and heat recovery from shower water. What's remarkable are the solar panels, integrated into the facade and roof. An SDE+ subsidy has been applied for the residents, ensuring the Homeowners Association receives a subsidy for their electricity production for the next 15 years. The building generates almost three times more energy than it consumes and, with its extremely low EPC, is the most sustainable apartment complex built in the Benelux (and possibly beyond) to date.
