Project description
The new construction project Spaarndammerhart is a residential complex on the site of the former Spaarndammer School. The special complex contains 36 courtyard homes and townhouses (for sale), 20 free-sector rental homes and 24 social rental homes. The heart of the project is the collective green courtyard accessible through gates that connect to the informal routes in the neighborhood. The gates and court paving feature artwork.
The new building is based on the richness of the Amsterdam School tradition in which architecture, art and nature combine. There are communal gardens in which the existing large trees are regrouped, providing a generous green view for both residents in the new building and residents in the existing adjacent homes.
The project is in line with the progressive Rainproof policy of the City of Amsterdam. Green roofs collect rainwater and there is as little paving as possible in the public space. During heat stress, the many greenery and robust facades provide cooling. The planting is tailored to provide food for expected urban wildlife such as small songbirds, bats and insects. Nesting boxes for small birds, swifts and bats are located in the raised eaves and facades.
