Project description
Schoonschip is Europe's most sustainable floating neighborhood developed by the residents themselves. In this ecologically and socially sustainable district, 46 households have been living on 30 arks since early 2020. Half of the arks are "two-on-one-hull," the floating variant of a semi-detached house. By jointly formulating ambitions and frameworks while offering freedom to residents and architects within those bounds, a highly diverse, creative residential area has been created. Schoonschip is located in the Johan van Hasseltkanaal in Buiksloterham (Amsterdam-Noord).

As many sustainable materials and installations as possible have been used. The water homes are extremely well insulated (EPC = maximum 0). The homes are connected by a pier with five connections to the shore, and a long pier parallel to the shore. This pier is owned by the residents and was designed based on the residents' wishes.

The homes are not connected to the natural gas network. Heating is provided by heat pumps that extract heat from the canal water (aquathermal energy). Residents generate their own energy using solar panels. Each home has a large battery in which energy can be stored. A smart grid allows electricity to be exchanged among residents, meaning that 46 households share only a single connection to the national energy grid. There is a separate drainage system for grey water (from the dishwasher and washing machine) and black water (from the toilet).

All homes are equipped with a green roof and/or facade, where, for example, your own food can be produced. Schoonschip is a breeding ground for the latest sustainable technologies and solutions.
