Het Schip: nominated for the Amsterdam New-Build Prize 2019

Het Schip is a national monument from 1920. Het Schip is the prime example of the Amsterdam School, showing how attractive social housing can be. The complex comprises 81 rental homes. These are located in the Zaanstraat, Oostzaanstraat, and Hembrugstraat. The structural shell has been restored with the utmost care, returning the exterior as closely as possible to its original appearance. Due to various interventions in the past, that appearance had been severely damaged.

The homes have been upgraded as much as possible to current comfort standards, taking the upcoming energy transition into account. Because the interiors had already undergone rigorous changes in the past, this provided the opportunity to make the homes more sustainable in a modern way. Thanks to good insulation of the building envelope, 8 to 12 homes can now be heated using two standard boilers, with provisions for a gas-free installation.
