The Ship

Het Schip, a major restoration project in the Spaarndammerbuurt district, has won the 2019 Amsterdam New-Build Prize. The project, comprising 81 social rental homes, has been completely overhauled inside and out. The homes now feature modern-day comfort and are ready to be heated without gas in the future. In addition to the residences, the Het Schip museum was also established, which is entirely dedicated to the Amsterdam School architectural style.

Het Schip is a national historic landmark dating from 1920, owned by the Eigen Haard housing authority. It suffered from noise pollution, inadequate fire resistance, and all sorts of technical defects. It is the quintessential example of the Amsterdam School style. Following the renovation and restoration, the apartments have largely remained affordable as social housing. They are new homes in an old building. The facades were renovated, and 6,500 window panes were replaced. Considerable effort was made to give the homes the quality of new construction without compromising their historic character.
