The Andreas Ensemble is rising on the site of the former Andreas Hospital. The site is bordered on the east and south sides by canals and on the north and west sides by the busy Cornelis Lelylaan near the A10 highway. Referring to the enclosed block structures of Amsterdam School architecture, the master plan by Geurst & Schulze provided for apartment buildings on the outer edge of the area. On the one hand, they shield the inner area from the busy roads; on the other hand, it creates an intimate atmosphere in the inner courtyard.
The four buildings in the inner area designed by Tony Fretton Architects were intended to become a serene focal point of the project with an open character. Single-family homes are located on the ground floor and the first floor. The spacious and bright apartments have an average surface area of 114 m2. By placing the circulation space in the core of the buildings and using a concrete floor slab, the floor plans could be laid out flexibly and living rooms and balconies could be positioned optimally relative to the sun, regardless of the orientation of the building. The project is constructed of gray Danish brick and features anodized aluminum window frames.
