Demolition-new construction mindful of human scale and existing environment
Fridtjof Nansenhof is a demolition-new construction project by Eigen Haard, located between Erasmus Park and the A10 motorway. The original fifty ground-floor houses were demolished in a circular way: materials and elements were given a second life in other projects. Now there are 69 new social housing units. A nice densification, with which more people can (continue to) live in the city. The Robert Scott neighborhood needed more security - through 'eyes on the street' - as well as more encounters through collective courtyards and more green space.

Living
The project contains a mix of social and mid-rent housing. In addition to apartments, ground and detached houses are included in the design. The surface areas range from 46 to 106 m². The spacious single-family homes, especially in this segment, are quite exceptional in Amsterdam.

Architecture
DOOR architects designed the plan with an emphasis on human scale and connection to the existing environment. The inner courtyards are green and inviting. The colorful planting in the front gardens, in combination with built yard fences, provides recognition and privacy. This not only enhances the streetscape, but also the living enjoyment of the residents.

Fridtjof Nansenhof consists of six buildings with a solid two-story plinth, matching the scale of the adjacent Piggelmee houses. The superstructure is stepped towards the Jan van Galenstraat, creating space for sheltered roof terraces. The facades are composed of a "fabric" of three types of brick in different depths. As a result, the building connects to the diverse scales and atmospheres of the neighborhood. The design is modest but distinct and enhances the characteristic architecture of this lively neighborhood in West.
