The assignment for the FagelCats project was to grow old in your own neighborhood. Therefore, the program consists of lifelong housing rental apartments, group homes with 24-hour care for people with dementia, and common areas. Part of the design concept was to create a common space in the garden between the two building blocks. The building sections are physically connected by transparent corridors that lead to the heart of the project: the garden pavilion. Here residents can meet each other and enjoy the garden. The garden, in contrast to this inner-city space, has been made as natural as possible. Hence the use of untreated Accoya wood for columns, beams and decking, and for the exterior frames in the inner courtyard. The choice for Accoya was not only based on quality and appearance, but also on its strength properties, low maintenance costs, and sustainability aspects. The roofs are covered with sedum.
At the same time, new construction offered the opportunity to revitalize this neglected nineteenth-century building block. It was a challenge to design the new facades of the residential buildings on Fagelstraat and Jacob Catskade in such a way that a modern interpretation of the historical formal language took place. Artist Aam Solleveld designed bluestone panels with line drawings to decorate the entrances.
