The building De Spreeuwen is located in a prime location on the tip of the Wiborgeiland, the first island in the Houthaven. This location is very popular and therefore there was a risk of unaffordable housing. However, Ymere has managed to keep the rents affordable. The apartments are between 40m² and 104m². Ymere wants to create a diverse area with these homes, where people with a modest income can also find a place to live, work and study.
The social housing is a mix of one- and two-story apartments with two, three, or four rooms. The outdoor spaces are located on the outside of the block and overlook the water. The residents enjoy the view and their privacy, while at the same time they live together and safely on the courtyard and square. On a few prominent vantage points, Piet Parra has created three works of art. At the tip of the roof rests the apple from his flight from the swarm of sparrows (the warehouse workers were called that) that is chasing him.
The block is a dynamic, multi-sided and detached ensemble of various buildings and stands on three sides in the water. The maximum residential program is implemented in the block in a compact manner, making it affordable.
The project is called The Sparrows, after the boys who in the 18th and 19th centuries came from other neighborhoods to ‘fly in’ to the shipyards to unload ships.
