The Banne Centrum is a 54,500 m2 complex designed by architect Eric Scholman of rphs+ architects from Voorburg. In addition to shops and residential units, it includes a public library, a gym, space for after-school care, and a so-called Huis van de Wijk (House of the Neighborhood). There are also two parking garages with 410 spaces. The retail space has been almost completely taken up, especially by retailers that were located in the old shopping center In de Banne.
To give De Banne the idea of a city boulevard, the residential buildings are linked to each other and to the IJdoornlaan by a two-story plinth. The plinth means the lower level or levels of a building, if those differ significantly from the other floors. The residential buildings, which are no more than eight storeys high, stand alternately perpendicular to and parallel to the boulevard.
