CPO Science Park started as a group of neighbors from Watergraafsmeer. Now, the group of residents comes from all over Amsterdam. Together with Atelier van Wengerden, we realized a residential building (new construction) for sixteen households based on CPO (co-housing). The building was delivered at the end of January 2019. In line with the names of buildings in the neighborhood, the name CHIOS was chosen.
CPO Sciencepark is the winner of the Zuiderkerk Prize 2019, the most important architecture prize for housing projects in Amsterdam. According to the jury, Atelier van Wengerden's 'modest' residential block possesses 'exceptional architectural quality, providing the greatest surprise from a neglected space in a somewhat uninspiring area.' The jury writes: 'This project can serve as an example in the fierce struggle for the city to create beautiful, good, and sustainable homes. It demonstrates that it is possible to build affordable housing with self-determination and passion. CPO Sciencepark is a beautifully open block that widens as it rises from a small plinth and also makes a turn.'
The challenge of this plot lay in several factors. Firstly, because it is situated on a dike, it is subject to numerous conditions from the Water Board. Secondly, the building is located on an access road to the ring road, with its associated noise pollution, and is surrounded by much taller buildings, which impacts daylight. Finally, there were strict requirements for energy management. For multiple reasons, it was decided that an overhanging volume would be the most elegant and suitable solution. This was primarily determined by the fact that the dike is a protected area where construction is not permitted.
