The Van der Pekbuurt in Amsterdam-Noord consists of 1,476 homes and commercial spaces. This garden village was the first major urban expansion in Amsterdam-Noord. The entire neighborhood is a nationally protected town and village cityscape. Ymere has now tackled the southern part and extensively renovated 172 homes in the social housing sector.
The buildings have been given a new foundation and the residential floors underfloor heating. The homes were completely gutted and a new layout was subsequently installed; the returning residents designed the new home layout themselves. The roof has been insulated and fitted with new roof tiles. All installations in the homes have been renewed; the energy label has been upgraded from G to A. In close consultation with Monuments & Archeology and the Spatial Quality Committee, it was determined how and in what manner the outer shell of the homes was restored. The homes for sale must also follow these guidelines during renovation. At Van der Pekplein, some homes have been converted into retail and hospitality spaces.
From reviled to beloved; that is roughly the trajectory this neighborhood has gone through over the past five years. For every rental property that becomes available, there are many hundreds of responses.
