Eerste Oosterparkstraat 88-126: nominated for Amsterdam New Building Prize 2020

On Oosterpark Street, sixteen new buildings were built in a historically responsible manner. The old, late nineteenth-century buildings were too low, too narrow and too small. There was a demand for a crowd puller, in the form of a 1,000-square-meter supermarket, a number of stores and homes. But demolition was not what the neighborhood and politicians wanted. It would be an impoverishment of the already degraded street with much meager urban renewal. But adjusting the height of the first floor was not technically possible. This resulted in rebuilding the existing buildings with a higher first floor and, for reasons of feasibility, sometimes an extra floor.

Historically responsible new construction saved the street's character. 39 social housing units, a supermarket of about 1,000 m2 and six stores were built. During demolition, elements such as facade anchors, balcony railings and natural stone ornaments were dismantled for reuse. The apartments have a common entrance with stairwell and elevator and are accessed via an interior corridor on the second floor. This creates ground-floor apartments and maisonettes.

A thorough surveying of the façade wall, recording all specific
architectural details, masonry dressings, stone types and layer sizes preceded demolition.
