The Steltloper is a unique residential tower with 18 floors located on the Ertskade in the Eastern Docklands. The tower, with 126 rental apartments, is partly in the water and partly on high stilts. The building is raised above land on slender columns, thus preserving the view along the quay towards the city center.
The Steltloper on Sporenburg is the finishing touch to the Eastern Docklands. For a long time, this site on the Ertskade lay derelict. The slender, elegant tower now completes the peninsula. The appearance of the Steltloper is light and airy, deviating from the sea of red brick houses on Sporenburg. The strength of the Steltloper lies in the 12-meter diagonal columns on which the tower rests on land and the straight ones that stand in the water. On the seventeen floors above, the apartments are sometimes visible horizontally, sometimes vertically behind the facade, so it hasn't become a monotonous block.
For residents and those living nearby, there is a community space and a waterside cafe on the ground floor. A park-like public space for the neighborhood with grass, basalt stones, various types of vegetation, and a recreational jetty made of Accoya wood surrounds the building. Beneath this landscape, a parking garage with 88 parking spaces and a bicycle storage facility has been realized. The park contributes to rainwater management capacity.
The slender facades are clad with champagne-colored panels of stabilized aluminum foam with an open structure. These panels give the building a robust appearance and, at the same time, a refined sheen. The design of the corner balconies adds an elegant play of scale and rhythm to this. "De Steltloper" (The Stilt Walker) distinguishes itself through its height and appearance from the predominantly low-rise residential buildings in the area. The building has district heating, utilizes carbon dioxide-controlled ventilation, and has a solar power system.
