Kraaipan School

The Kraaipanschool is the winner of the 2014 Amsterdam New-Build Prize. It was also the first time that a project consisting solely of social housing won the Amsterdam New-Build Prize. Additionally, the project had won the Zuiderkerk Prize, the professionals' award. The Kraaipanschool project combines old and new in the style of the Amsterdam School. The monumental school was renovated, and in addition, two new construction blocks were erected with a new neighborhood square in the middle.

The monumental Kraaipand school is as good as new again and now contains (adapted) homes for people with a psychiatric condition. Fifty senior apartments have been built in the new construction. Care institution Cordaan has been given five group homes for elderly people with dementia. Furthermore, the project houses the Kraaipan service point. The jury of the Zuiderkerkprijs called the project "a gift to the city."

The Kraaipanschool Project is a project involving demolition, renovation, and new construction. The detailing and architecture reference the style of the Amsterdam School and give the project a pleasant, warm appearance. The demolition and new construction provided the opportunity to create a square with many possibilities and high quality for the neighborhood. The square serves as a binding element between the residential area and the neighborhood service point. Because of the square, the original rear facade of the school has become a beautiful front facade with a recognizable face for the neighborhood.
