The new construction project De Citadel is part of the renewal of Nieuw-West. It is a striking building on Reinier Engelmanstraat in the middle of the center of the Slotervaart district.

Around communal patios, 149 starter apartments with outdoor space have been built. There are several housing types with one or two bedrooms. Living areas range from 40 m2 to 65 m2. All homes are fully finished and are delivered turn-key, including a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. The homes will be rented in the private sector.

Architecture
Respect for the neighborhood and its history is central to the design of The Citadel. The complex was built on the site of the former post office across from homes that in the 1950s were characterized by their sawtooth - or zigzag - architecture and blue eaves. This earned the neighborhood the nickname "Blueband," after the Dutch margarine brand. This classic design is given a modern twist in the architecture of The Citadel, reflected in the unique zigzag facades that together form a dynamic wave motion.

To preserve the existing architecture in the neighborhood, a medium-height building was chosen. This kept the same rectangular shape as the former post office, but created air and light through courtyards with several patios, floor-to-ceiling windows in the residences and large outdoor spaces. A good balance was found in the use of color: The white concrete and white balconies are contrasted with dark gray and black details, while the patios have a homely warmth through the use of wood.

Housing and parking
The first floor residences are located approximately one meter off the street, allowing tenants to live with a lively view with minimal intrusion. This elevation immediately provides the opportunity to fill in space between the ground and homes with seating areas and greenery for greater contact between The Citadel and the surrounding area. Underneath the apartments is an underground parking garage that can accommodate sixty cars.

Sustainability
The construction of the apartment complex took into account the highest standards of sustainability. All homes have a very sustainable energy label. The complex partially features sedum roofing for optimal rainwater harvesting, solar panels for the lowest possible ecological footprint.
