Larch
Lariks is the first building in Amsterdam (the Netherlands?) with Friends apartments in social housing. It is a residential concept by housing association Lieven de Key for young people who are working or about to graduate. The homes are both affordable and comfortable: safe, clean, and pleasant living at a very affordable rent. There are also independent 2-room apartments for young people with social professions in education and healthcare. The building contains 104 social rental homes.
The 92 m2 Friends apartments are designed for three people. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 28 rent their own 20 m2 room with a bathroom and toilet. The three residents share a spacious kitchen-diner. In addition to the apartments, the residential building includes two large indoor bicycle storage areas for residents, a shared laundry facility, and a courtyard garden. In this garden, the young adults can meet each other, garden together, and relax. The design takes future scenarios into account so that the apartments can easily be converted into standard apartments.
The design is inspired by the Amsterdam School architecture from the adjacent Spaarndammerbuurt. All street facades are composed of the same facade elements, masonry, exposed aggregate concrete, and aluminum window frames in a tonal color scheme. Yet each facade has its own character that responds to the urban space it borders. The facades surrounding the garden feature beige-gray masonry and whitewashed wooden cladding, which together with the balconies and pergolas create an informal atmosphere.
