Housing for teachers in IJburg

Juf Nienke is a sustainable new construction project on the Centrumeiland in IJburg. The wooden residential building with a tough and urban look comprises 61 rental homes. The name of the project was not chosen by chance. Half of the homes are offered as mid-segment rentals for teachers and other people with key jobs in Amsterdam. In doing so, the project hopes to contribute to reducing the city's teacher shortage.

Living in Miss Nienke

In Juf Nienke there are different types of homes, from apartments to ground-level homes. The 30 medium-priced rental homes are between 48m2 and 91m2 in size and 31 free sector rental homes between 60m2 and 116m2. Juf Nienke is accessed by a recognizable entrance and an open meeting street with lazy stairs on either side. Through the stairs, residents have access to a raised deck with a beautiful view of the peaceful communal courtyard garden. The high transparent plinth will soon house a day care center and a fun fitness studio has opened, which is sure to add to the vibrancy and neighborhood feel.

Architecture Teacher Nienke

The building is composed of five layers, together 15 meters high, of stacked wooden modules on a concrete table structure. The materials used are mostly biobased and recycled; they have a low environmental impact and are largely renewable. The cleverly stacked prefabricated wooden modules (HSB and partly CLT) have a standard width of 4 meters with varying depths and are demountable, allowing the building to be easily modified. Because it is built almost entirely in wood, the houses save over 580,000 kg of CO2, actively contributing to a better climate and a healthy living environment. Moreover, thanks to the industrial prefabrication of the wooden modules, the impact on the site during the construction process has been minimal.
