Residents of Amsterdam have voted De Warren in Amsterdam IJburg as the winner of the Amsterdam New-Build Prize 2024. The contrast with last year, when the iconic Valley building on the Zuidas won, could hardly be greater. De Warren is Amsterdam's first housing cooperative. It is a social and sustainable building with 36 affordable rental homes. The project received more than 25 percent of the votes. Alderman Reinier van Dantzig and Arno Visser of Bouwend Nederland presented the award to the residents, the contractor, and the architect on Saturday, June 8.
De Warren is a collective residential building on Centrumeiland in Amsterdam with 36 apartments for social and mid-market rent. It is Amsterdam's first self-build housing cooperative. The building was developed by a group of Amsterdammers who are collectively the owners and managers of the building. With this building, this development group demonstrates that sustainable and affordable housing in Amsterdam is within reach. The building is energy-positive and constructed from wood that was partially reused. Kim Otten, an early initiator and now a resident of De Warren, expressed great pride: “We are the first to have succeeded. But what is even better is that many other housing cooperatives are now developing. It is important for the city that this movement continues to grow, because we need more control by residents themselves.”
Alderman Van Dantzig is also enthusiastic: “De Warren is a fantastic place to live and deserves to win this award,” he said after the award ceremony. “I think many people want to live in a place where you look out for one another, with shared spaces. A place that also looks so incredibly beautiful. Congratulations on this award.”
The Amsterdam New-Build Prize 2024 was awarded on Construction Day, Saturday, June 8. Bouwend Nederland organizes this day every year, during which more than 150 construction projects across the country can be visited. "Build what there is a demand for," said Arno Visser of Bouwend Nederland. "This is precisely what was central to the construction of De Warren. Congratulations to ToekomstGroep and Natrufied architecture. You not only listened to the residents' wishes, but also ensured that they can live sustainably and affordably in Amsterdam. I hope many more people see their housing wishes fulfilled in the coming years."
The Amsterdam New-Build Prize is the public award for new construction in Amsterdam. This edition focused on residential construction projects completed in Amsterdam between August 2022 and August 2023. In the first round, a public jury of nearly 250 residents of Amsterdam nominated the ten most appealing projects out of 78 new-build projects. Those ten projects competed in the finale, where everyone could vote via www.amsterdamwoont.nl/newbuildprice vote for his or her favorite project. In total, nearly 3,500 people cast their vote.
