Between Heemstede and Hoofddorp lies the pretty village of Cruquius. This small village, on the Ringvaart canal, has about 1,000 inhabitants. Cruquius falls under the municipality of Haarlemmermeer and is named after the nineteenth-century steam pumping station of the same name, which is on the UNESCO world heritage list. There is also plenty of new construction in Cruquius.
