Aalsmeer has been called the flower capital of the Netherlands. That has everything to do with the Royal FloraHolland flower auction. That auction has historical roots dating back to the nineteenth century. Then, around 1880, it was discovered that the peat soil around the village was very suitable for growing flowers, initially especially roses. Besides flowers, Aalsmeer also owes its fame to the presence of large TV studios.
