The Andreas Ensemble Phase 2: nominated for the Amsterdam New Construction Prize 2012
The Andreas Ensemble is being built on the site of the former Andreas Hospital. The site is bordered on the east and south side by canals and on the north and west side by the busy Cornelis Lelylaan on the A10. The master plan of Geurst & Schulze provided, referring to the closed building blocks of the Amsterdam School architecture, apartment buildings on the outer edge of the area. On the one hand they shield the inner area from the busy roads, on the other hand they create an intimate atmosphere in the courtyard. The four buildings in the inner area designed by Tony Fretton Architects were to become a serene centerpiece of the project with an open character. Single-family homes are situated on the ground and first floors. The spacious and bright apartments have an average surface area of 114 m2. Due to the placement of the circulation space in the core of the buildings and the use of a concrete floor slab, the floor plans could be arranged flexibly and living rooms and balconies could be optimally positioned in relation to the sun, regardless of the orientation of the building. The project is built in gray Danish brick and has anodised aluminum frames.
