Haveneiland Oost Blok 51a wins Amsterdam New Construction Prize 2009

For the third time, the residents of Amsterdam have voted for the best housing project of the past year. Alderman Maarten van Poelgeest announced the winner during a live broadcast of AT5 in the theater of the Amsterdam Public Library. The prize went to the residents, the client Blauwhoed Eurowoningen, the architect Queeste architects and the contractor Slokker Bouwgroep to loud applause. Haveneiland Oost Blok 51a is located on the Emmy Andriessestraat in IJburg. The building consists of a row of 26 town houses, varying in size from 176 to 193 m2. Due to their location between Theo van Gogh Park and the 'green tunnel', the houses have an unobstructed view on both sides. The challenge for Queeste architects was to capture both the qualities of the city and nature in the building and to make them tangible for the residents. From the outside, the building has two faces. The facade at Theo van Gogh Park is made of warm dark red brick. The unambiguous use of materials, the high eaves and rows of windows give it an urban allure. This is accentuated by the entrance and exit of the garage and the striking clock. Very surprising is the light, sunny back of the 'green tunnel' with terraces on several floors. This staggered facade is combined with six-meter-high portals made of Siberian larch. The portals distinguish the individual houses and offer a beautiful frame of nature. Haveneiland Oost Blok 51a received 18% of the votes from the Amsterdammers, making it the number one of the ten nominated new-build projects.
