De Banne Centrum is a 54,500 m2 complex designed by architect Eric Scholman of rphs + architecten from Voorburg. In addition to shops and residences, it contains a public library, a gym, space for after-school care and a so-called Huis van de Wijk. There are also two parking garages with 410 spaces. The retail space has almost completely declined, mainly due to retailers who were located in the old shopping center In de Banne. To give De Banne the idea of a city boulevard, the residential buildings are linked to each other and to the IJdoornlaan by a two-layer plinth. The plinth means as much as the bottom layer or layers of a building, if they clearly differ from the other floors. The residential buildings of up to eight storeys high are alternately perpendicular to and parallel to the boulevard.
