Kraaipanschool: winner of the Amsterdam New Construction Prize 2014
Ymere has realized the Kraaipan project in East Amsterdam. It concerns the renovation of the monumental Kraaipanschool and the new construction of two blocks of social rental housing in the Transvaalbuurt. Fifty seniors' homes have been built in Hofmeyrstraat, including a residential group for Moroccan seniors. Care institution Cordaan has received five group homes for elderly people suffering from dementia on Transvaalkade / Hofmeyrstraat. The Kraaipanschool has 10 houses for people with a psychiatric disorder. Hofmeyrstraat has been given a new neighborhood square and is the entrance to the Kraaipan service point. Visual artist Martijn Sandberg has designed a floor artwork for the new square. The text “Everything will be okay” is written on the square with lines of light yellow vowels. The artwork was made possible in part by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. The architecture of the new-build houses fits in with the style of the Berlage architecture in the area. In the Kraaipanschool, the original details have been brought back during the renovation. Kraaipanschool was the winner of the Zuiderkerk Prize in 2013, a prestigious professional prize among architects.
