Bankastraat – East Indies old and new: third place Amsterdam New Construction Award 2014
The buildings Bankastraat 22 and 24 are part of an architectural unit of five buildings built in 1902. The foundations of the buildings showed major defects and in 2004 the facades were propped up due to serious subsidence. Demolition / new construction was the only solution. The original street facades were then rebuilt with seven new-build homes behind them. The two buildings now have one central staircase, painted sunny yellow and with a large skylight. To create large living spaces, the upper houses have been designed as maisonettes: four maisonettes over three floors. Through a bright, spacious hall you can look through the houses from front to back. The upper houses have extra light and views through cantilevered bay windows in the side wall.
