Eerste Oosterparkstraat 88-126: nominated for the Amsterdam New Construction Award 2020
Sixteen new-build properties have been built in a historically responsible manner in Oosterparkstraat. The old, late nineteenth century buildings were too low, too narrow and too small. There was a demand for a crowd puller, in the form of a supermarket of 1,000 m2, a number of shops and homes. But the neighborhood and politicians did not want to demolish. It would be an impoverishment of the already damaged street with a lot of sparse urban renewal. But adjusting the height of the ground floor was not technically possible. This resulted in the rebuilding of the existing buildings with a higher ground floor and sometimes an extra floor due to the feasibility. The character of the street has been saved by historically responsible new construction. 39 social rental homes, a supermarket of approx. 1,000 m2 and six shops have been realized. During demolition, elements such as façade anchors, balcony fences and natural stone ornaments were dismantled for reuse. The houses have a common entrance with staircase and elevator and are accessed via an inner corridor on the second floor. This creates ground-floor apartments and maisonettes. A thorough measurement of the facade wall, the recording of all specific architectural details, the masonry bonds, the brick types and the layer sizes preceded the demolition.
