CPO Science Park: nominated for the Amsterdam New Construction Award 2020
CPO Science Park started as a group of neighbors from Watergraafsmeer. Meanwhile, the group of residents comes from all over the world (from Amsterdam). Together with Atelier van Wengerden, we have realized a residential block (new construction) for sixteen households based on CPO (collective private commissioning). The property was completed at the end of January 2019. In accordance with the names of buildings in the area, the name CHIOS was chosen. CPO Sciencepark is the winner of the Zuiderkerkprijs 2019, the most important architecture prize for housing projects in Amsterdam. According to the jury, the 'modest' housing block of Atelier van Wengerden has an 'exceptional architectural quality, which caused the greatest surprise of a lost space in a somewhat joyless area'. The jury writes: 'This project can serve as an example in the grim battle for the city, to create beautiful, good and sustainable homes. It shows that it is possible to build affordable homes with self-determination and passion. CPO Science Park is a beautifully cut-away block that widens upwards on a small plinth and also makes a turn. ' The challenge of this lot lay in a number of factors, firstly because it is located on a dike and is therefore subject to numerous preconditions of the Water Board. In addition, the building is located on an access road to the ring road with its associated noise load and is surrounded by much higher buildings, which has consequences for daylight. Finally, there were strict requirements for energy management. For several reasons, it was decided that a transferring volume is the most elegant and suitable solution. This was mainly determined by the fact that the dike is a protected area on which construction is prohibited.
