June 15th 2019
Het Schip, a major restoration project in the Spaarndammerbuurt in Amsterdam, has won the Amsterdam Nieuwbouwprijs 2019. The project with 81 social rental properties has been fully addressed inside and out. The houses have been given the comfort of today and are ready to be heated without gas in the future. Alderman Laurens Ivens (Building and Living) and chairman of Bouwend Nederland Maxime Verhagen presented the prize to residents and stakeholders on the Day of Construction, on Saturday 15 June.
The Ship: ready for the next 100 years
“This year 5,300 people voted for the 10 nominated projects,” said Alderman Ivens. “That is more than ever! The Ship is a great winner. I am very pleased that Eigen Haard has invested in the renovation with this wonderful result. This project scores high because after the renovation and restoration the houses are largely affordable in the social rent We are building neighborhoods in Amsterdam and this project is ready for the next 100 years. ”
An example project
“They are new homes with an old look,” says Maxime Verhagen of Bouwend Nederland. “Vastbouw Oost BV from Rijssen has completely stripped the interior of the houses and has been re-arranged. The facades have been renewed for 30 percent and 6,500 windows have been replaced. The contractor has done a wonderful job and put a lot of effort into giving the houses the quality of new construction, without detracting from the monumental character. Really an exemplary project! Many homes in the Netherlands (and Amsterdam) still have to be made energy efficient. The knowledge gained here can be used for other projects. ”
Het Schip: apart from houses, also a museum
Het Schip is a national monument from 1920 by housing corporation Eigen Haard. There was talk of noise, insufficient fire resistance and all kinds of technical defects. It is the exemplary project of the Amsterdam School in the Spaarndammerbuurt. The houses are located in Zaanstraat, Oostzaanstraat and Hembrugstraat. In addition to the houses, Museum Het Schip has also been realized. This is entirely devoted to De Amsterdamse School. Watch the video that AT5 made about Het Schip.
The result of the restoration of Het Schip:
- The 81 social rental properties again fully meet the comfort standards of today with soundproof walls and new floors with underfloor heating.
- The houses now have energy label A. The energy transition to gasless has been taken into account.
- The hull has been carefully restored. The outer facade has been brought back to the original design as well as possible.
