Mi Oso ('My House') in Southeast wins Amsterdam New Build Award 2021
June 26th 2021

New construction project Mi Oso in Amsterdam Zuidoost has won the Amsterdam New Construction Prize 2021, the public prize for new construction in the city. The project received more than twenty percent of the more than 5,000 votes. The project consists of 42 owner-occupied homes and 84 social rental homes. Alderman Laurens Ivens (Building and Living) presented the prize together with Dick Verhoeven of Bouwend Nederland to the residents, Era Contour, Geurst & Schulze architects and Eigen Haard.

Appealing architecture

Mi Oso means My House in Surinamese. “With one-third owner-occupied homes and two-thirds social rent, Mi Oso is really a home for people from all kinds of backgrounds,” said alderman Ivens. “Everyone can live here. And many people want that too. Mi Oso is a project with a mix of Surinamese and Dutch influences .” One of the residents underlines that. “There are very diverse people who live here, but they really form a community. You could call Mi Oso a beguinage in Southeast.”

Mi Oso: white facades, green shutters, red roofs and verandas

Characteristic of the single-family houses are the white facades, the beautiful green shutters on the windows, the red roofs and the verandas. Just like in Paramaribo, the architecture also has Dutch influences, such as the typology of the houses, the red tiled roofs and the dark green color accents. All single-family homes consist of three floors and have a romantic veranda at the front.

Also social housing in Mi Oso

The social housing units are accessible via a gallery that is also designed as a veranda, with seating areas. On the street side, the houses have terraces, large balconies on high columns and a protruding pitched roof. Here too, we looked at larger buildings in Paramaribo, such as schools and hospitals, where these elements are characteristic. However, the typology of the gallery flat can again be called 'Dutch' and is in line with the local characteristics of Zuidoost.

Bringing the outdoors closer

Jeroen Geurst of Geurst & Schulze architects: “I come to Suriname every year to visit my in-laws. I got inspired by the architecture style there with porches. Whether it's snowing, raining or sunny, the veranda brings the outdoors a lot closer.”
